Between 1919 and 1921 a series of experiments were undertaken for a square coinage in nickel to replace the large bronze penny and halfpenny coins.
Interesting fact
The Kookaburra Pattern ½ Penny coin from Australia, minted in 1921, features a unique design of a kookaburra bird on its reverse side, which was created by artist and sculptor, Edgar Bertram Mackennal.
