The Pattern V Réis - Pedro II (Pattern) 1688 coin was minted during a time of great change in Portugal. It was the first coin to feature the portrait of King Pedro II, who had recently ascended to the throne after the death of his father, King João V. This coin was also unique in that it was made of copper, whereas previous versions of the réis had been made of silver.
