Reverse

Tamgha surrounded by Sogdian legend.

Script: Sogdian

Lettering: pny 'krty c'cynk xwbw nyrt

Translation: Coin made by the Chach ruler Nirtanak

Edge

Plain

Comment

Two varieties of the legend exist: those read from inside to outside and those read from outside to inside.

The former has the flat parts of the legend facing towards the tamgha, and the latter has the flat parts of the legend facing away from the tamgha (like the pictured example).

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features an image of the moon on one side, which suggests that the Principality of Chach may have had a strong astronomical tradition or significance.
