Comment
In 1688 the price of the gold ant the silver incresed by 20%. There was no time to collect and cast the circulating coin. Therefore, by the Law 04AUG1688, the value of the silver and gold coins was also increased by 20%. However, during ~150 years the coinage remains unchanged with the circulating coins having a value ~20% above the mark.
Interesting fact
The Tostão - Maria I ND (1786-1799) coin from Portugal was minted during the reign of Queen Maria I, who was known as "Maria the Pious" or "Maria the Mad." She was the first queen to rule Portugal in her own right, and her reign was marked by a series of political and economic reforms. Despite her efforts, however, the country faced significant challenges during her rule, including a major earthquake in 1755 that destroyed much of Lisbon and a subsequent famine that affected much of the population. Despite these challenges, the Tostão coin remained a popular and widely used denomination during this time.
