Comment

Before WW1, foreign coins were mostly circulating in this territory. Indeed, metropolitan coins were legal tender, but they were too scarce. On November 21st 1885, this obliged Commandant Lagarde to enact an order giving legal tender to and to British India and (in the reign of Victoria).

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was issued during a time of great change and upheaval in the region. The Obock Territory, where the coin was minted, was a French colony in East Africa that was established in 1862. However, in 1896, the territory was ceded to the French Somali Coast, which later became Djibouti. This coin was minted during this transition period, making it a unique piece of history.
