Comment

Charles IV became Duke of Lorraine in 1625, but was forced to abdicate in favor of his younger brother in 1634, and go into exile when the French invaded Lorraine. He was able to return to Lorraine in 1661. From a numismatic viewpoint, coins were issued in his name in the 1620s and 1630s, but not again until the 1660s.

There are variations in the obverse legend of this type nearly every year of issue.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Standard circulation coin Teston - Charles IV (long hair) 1663-1669 from Duchy of Lorraine (French States) made of Silver weighing 8.6 g is that it was minted during a time of great change and turmoil in Europe. The coin was minted during the reign of Charles IV, who was the Duke of Lorraine from 1624 to 1634, and then again from 1643 to 1648. During this time, the Duchy of Lorraine was caught up in the midst of the Thirty Years' War, which was a devastating conflict that lasted from 1618 to 1648 and involved many European powers. Despite the turmoil, the minting of this coin suggests that the Duchy of Lorraine was able to maintain some level of economic stability and continuity during this time.
