This coin was named 'wapenstuiver' as it had a coat of arms (wapen) depicted on it. The other 18th century 1 Stuiver coin type features arrows and was called 'pijlstuiver' (arrow stiver) or 'bezemstuiver' (broom stiver), because the arrows resembled the hairs of a broom.

Interesting fact

The Stuiver "Wapenstuiver" coin from the Province of Holland (Dutch Republic) was used as a means of payment for soldiers during the Dutch War of Independence from Spain.
