Interesting fact
The Metapontion Stater was one of the first coins to feature a portrait of a human on one side and an animal on the other. The obverse (front) side of the coin features a bearded man wearing a wreath, while the reverse (back) side features a dolphin. This design was a departure from earlier coins, which often featured abstract designs or symbols, and marked a shift towards more realistic and representational artwork on coins.
