Comment

Smith Group 5 (Lete); AMNG III/2, 18 (Lete); HPM pl. VIII, 1-7; SNG ANS 956-961 (”Lete”); Peykov A0020; Rhousopoulos 877.

The original attribution of this series to Lete was based on Svoronos' incorrect reading of a late, inscribed issue. More recent studies, clearly show that the ethnic is CIRINON (in retrograde) for the town of Siris (modern Serres).

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features an image of a seated horseman on one side, which was a common motif in ancient Greek coinage, particularly in the Thraco-Macedonian region where this coin was minted. The horseman is often interpreted as a symbol of the ruling dynasty or as a representation of the god Apollo, who was associated with horses and horsemanship. The use of this motif on coins like this one helped to promote the cultural and political identity of the region and its rulers.
