Interesting fact
The obverse (front) side of the Thasian Stater features a portrait of the Greek goddess Athena, while the reverse (back) side depicts a griffin, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. This coin design was a common motif in ancient Greek coinage and symbolized the protection and power of the city-state of Thasos.
