Interesting fact
The Methymna Stater was used as a form of currency in ancient Greece and its design was inspired by the mythical creature, the Griffin. The obverse side of the coin features the head of a griffin, while the reverse side features the figure of a man riding a dolphin. This unique design was meant to symbolize the city's maritime power and its connection to the sea.
