Because the style of this type is so crude, it was likely Populonia's last type of silver coin.

There has been much controversy on dating Populonian coins, and as such, the date ranges my vary per source.

The second Lion's head series was struck using Populonia's fourth silver standard, which is equal to the third silver standard except with the weights of all denomination being halved.

Interesting fact

The Lion's Head series of coins, which includes the Silver 5 Asses coin , was issued by the Etruscan city of Populonia during the 3rd century BC. The lion's head on the coin faces right, which is a unique feature of this series.
