Comment
This type was seemingly struck on a 20 As planchet that was cut-down to be the same size as a 5 As piece. There has been much controversy on dating Populonian coins, and as such, the date ranges my vary per source.
The second Gorgoneion series was struck using Populonia's fourth silver standard, which is equal to the third silver standard except with the weights of all denomination being halved.
Interesting fact
The Gorgoneion series II: blank coin, which features a blank field on the reverse side, was minted during a time of great economic and political change in Etruria, particularly in the city of Populonia. Despite the uncertainty of the times, the coin's minting technology and design remained consistent with previous issues, indicating a remarkable level of continuity and stability in the region's monetary system.
