Comment

This type is unique and unpublished, with the following provenance:
- Ex-Collection of a British Connoisseur, part II, Artemide Aste San Marino, Auction 52, 26-7 October 2019, lot 18.
- Auctioned by Roma Numismatics, 29 October 2020, Lot 10.

There has been much controversy on dating Populonian coins, and as such, the date ranges my vary per source.

The type was seemingly struck using Populonia's third silver standard, with all being set at unrelated weights to the proceeding two standard; however, with this unpublished type being the only coin in the Corinthian helmet series, more information is needed to confirm that.

Interesting fact

The Corinthian helmet series of coins, which includes the Silver 5 Asses coin from Populonia (Etruria), was minted during a time of great cultural and artistic exchange between the cities of ancient Greece and Etruria. The Corinthian helmet was a symbol of Greek culture and was often depicted in art and architecture, and its use on these coins reflects the blending of Greek and Etruscan influences in the region.
