Comment

Only five examples are known.

There has been much controversy on dating Populonian coins, and as such, the date ranges my vary per source.

The first Gorgoneion series was struck using Populonia's third silver standard, with all being set at unrelated weights to the proceeding two standard.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique design on its reverse side, showcasing a pair of dolphins surrounding a central circle. This design is known as the "dolphin-drachm" type and was a distinctive feature of Etruscan coinage during this period. The use of dolphins as a symbol of currency and trade was a common practice among ancient civilizations, and it's believed that the Etruscans may have adopted this design as a way to signify their maritime trade connections and cultural exchange with other Mediterranean regions.
