Comment

The Chinese text has an incomplete value. It could be interpreted as “worth two cash/dongs” (ten cash in a cent, two dongs in a Sapèque) or “worth 2/1000 Piastre”.

The KM catalog erroneously identifies this type as a 2 Sapèque coin. Consequently, many auction houses also call it 2 Sapèque.

Interesting fact

The Sapèque coin from French Cochinchina (now Vietnam) is interesting because it was designed with a unique blend of French and Vietnamese cultural elements. The obverse features the profile of a French republican woman, while the reverse depicts a traditional Vietnamese dragon. This blending of cultures reflects the complex history of Vietnam during the colonial period, where French and Vietnamese influences coexisted and intertwined.
