Comment
The above pict is a PhotoShop work and might be not 100% correct. The original value of this coin was 1000 Réis. However, in 1683 gold and silver suddenly increased by 20%. There was neither the time nor the capacity at the mints to cast all the coins in circulation. Thus, by the Decree of 28SET1683, the value of all gold and silver coins was increased by 20%. However, instead of starting melting new coins, it continued, for 150 years, to produce exactly the same coins but with a value 20% higher than the face value
Interesting fact
The Quartinho - Pedro II (Prince crown, Lisbon) 1683 coin was minted during a time of great change in Portugal. It was the year that King Pedro II died, and his son, João V, ascended to the throne. This coin was minted as a way to commemorate the new king's reign and to solidify his power. The coin's design features the prince crown, which was a symbol of the new king's status as the heir apparent. The coin's mintage was limited, and it is now considered a rare and valuable collector's item.
