Comment

In 1688 the price of the gold ant the silver rise 20%. There was no time to collect and cast the circulating coin. Therefore, by the Law 04AUG1688, the value of the silver and gold coins was also increased 20%. However, during ~150 years the coinage remains unchanged with the circulating coins having a value ~20% above the face value.

Interesting fact

The Quartinho was a coin that was introduced during the reign of King José I of Portugal in 1751, and it was the first gold coin to be minted in Portugal. It was minted at the Lisbon Mint and was made of .9167 gold, weighing 2.69 grams. The coin was used as a standard circulation coin and was widely used in trade and commerce during that time. It's interesting to note that the Quartinho was a significant innovation in the field of numismatics, as it was one of the first coins to be made of a standardized weight and purity of gold, which made it a reliable and trustworthy form of currency. This fact highlights the importance of the Quartinho in the history of numismatics and its impact on the development of currency.
