Comment

Very rare piece (16 specimens listed by Weiller) struck around 1298 at the Luxembourg-city mint. The majority of the known pieces are in the Medal Cabinets of Brussels, Luxembourg, The Hague and Berlin. The prices paid during the rare sales exceeded the price of Probst.

Varieties of the reverse:
  • Right arm of the cross surmounted by a bar
  • Four arms of the cross surmounted by a bar

In total, 5 different legends are known for the obverse and 6 for the reverse.

The monetary system of Henry VII was adapted to the tournois system. This quarter gros had at the time the following theoretical relationship:
1 gros = 3 esterlins = 4 quart de gros = 12 deniers = 24 obols
(BV, p. 55 et Weiller, p. 15)
