The Trefoil type coin, issued by Jani Beg during his reign over the Golden Horde in 1352, is one of the first coins ever minted using Copper as the primary metal. This innovative choice of material not only helped to simplify and economize the coinage production process, but also made these coins more affordable and hence widely circulated among the population. The use of Copper in coinage was later adopted by other medieval states, including Russia, which began producing Copper coins in the 16th century.
