Joao III (The Pious) gold Portugues ND (1521-57), Crowned arms of Portugal dividing L-R/Cross of the Order of Christ, Vaz-J3.09, This variety unlisted in Friedberg, 34.71 gm, Fine. Extremely rare and the only record that we can find of this rare type selling at recent auction is a VF example of Fr-24 (one of the more available types, if there is such), which sold for $45,500 in a Hess-Divo sale in Zurich in 2003. The Eliasberg Collection did not have an example of a Portugues, and most major collections are missing this type. One of the true great European rarities.
Dom Joao III saw the Portuguese empire slowly decline and considered himself a failure. Fortunately, during his reign Portugal began the colonization of Brazil, slowing the decline and offsetting the loss of other parts of the empire.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Standard circulation coin Português "L-R"- João III (2nd type, Lisbon) ND (1525-1557) from Portugal made of Gold (.989) weighing 35.5 g is that it was minted during the reign of King João III, who was known for his efforts to modernize and strengthen the Portuguese economy. The coin's design features the king's name and title in Latin, "Iohannes III Dei Gratia Rex Portugaliae," which translates to "John III, by the grace of God, King of Portugal." The coin's mintage was likely used to promote trade and commerce within the kingdom and beyond.
