Comment

The pieter d'or in the name of Philip as Duke of Brabant and Limbourg was minted in four places: Louvain, Zeevenbergen, Namur and Valenciennes. The Valenciennes issues are distinguished by the small lion which begins the obverse legend.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Pieter d'Or coin is that it was minted during the reign of Philip the Good, who was the Duke of Burgundy and Count of Hainaut in the 15th century. The coin was made of gold and weighed 3.6 grams, which was a significant amount for a circulating coin at that time. The coin's design featured an image of Philip the Good on one side and the Hainaut coat of arms on the other. Despite its small size, the Pieter d'Or coin was an important part of the economy in the County of Hainaut and was widely used for trade and commerce.
