Comment
Late Anglo-Saxon period, Kings of England (973-1066), King Aethelred II (978-1016), silver long cross type penny. B.M.C. IVa
Aethelred was the son of King Eadgar, by his second wife Aelfthryth, and ascended the throne on the murder of his half-brother, Edward. He is known to posterity as ‘The Unready’ from ‘Unrede’, meaning ‘without counsel’, an epithet gained from the weakness of his royal government. During this reign, England was subjected to Viking raids of increasing frequency and strength, and a large amount of tribute was paid in order to secure peace. Large hoards have been found in Scandinavia and the Baltic region and coins are often found peck-marked.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Æthelred II (Long Cross type) Penny is that it features a unique design element known as a "long cross" on the reverse side of the coin. This long cross is a thin, elongated cross that extends from the center of the coin to the edges, and is surrounded by a circle of dots. This design was used to help prevent counterfeiting and to make the coin more easily identifiable as a legitimate form of currency.
