Octopus.

Comment

The type was previously attributed to Eryx, but later re-assigned to Motya (HGC 2 949). The value is also uncertain, with it either being listed as an onkia or a hexas. It is currently listed as an onkia here due to its resemblance to the Syracusan Octopus Onkia.

Interesting fact

The Onkia coin features a unique design on its reverse side, depicting a dolphin jumping out of the waves. This dolphin symbolism was significant in ancient Greek culture, representing intelligence, playfulness, and protection. The use of this symbol on the coin may have been meant to signify the importance of the sea and maritime trade to the city of Motya, which was a major commercial center in ancient Sicily.
