Comment
D. Legros believes that the Viscounty of Châteaudun was under the influence of the Counts of Blois and Chartres. Under Thibaut V le Bon, three viscounts succeeded each other at Châteaudun: Hugues IV (1136-1166), Geoffroy IV (1166-1183) and Hugues V (1183-1215). The coinage did not become viscountal until Geoffroy V (1215-1235) in 1218.The present obole is attributed to the counts of Châteaudun Thibaut V de Blois, known as "le Bon" (1151-1191), and Louis I de Blois (1191-1205), son of the former.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of great turmoil in France, specifically during the reign of King Philip II (1180-1223). The Viscounty of Châteaudun, where the coin was minted, was a powerful feudal state in the Loire Valley region of France, and the coin's design and materials reflect the political and economic influences of the time. The use of billon, a copper and silver alloy, was a common practice during this period, as it was a more affordable alternative to pure silver or gold coins. Additionally, the coin's anonymous design, featuring crescents on both sides, suggests that it may have been minted during a period of political instability or conflict, when the ruling powers may have wanted to avoid highlighting their own symbols or imagery.
