Comment
Many varieties exist (design of shield, design of cross, symbols in the angles of the cross).Though the later copper maille was valued lower, the silver maille issued in circa 1168-1300 had a silver content comparable to the French denier.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Standard circulation coin Maille - Anonymous (Bruges) ND (1250-1259) from County of Flanders (Belgian States) made of Silver is that it features a unique design element - a small cross pattée in the center of the obverse (front) side of the coin. This cross pattée is believed to have been added to the design as a symbol of the Christian faith, which was prevalent in the region at the time the coin was minted.
