King Louis XIII of France introduced a new silver denomination of 5 sols or 1/12 ecu in 1641, matching the 1 reale pieces circulating in the Ottoman Empire and the Levant. This denomination was imitated by various feudal lords (e.g. Dombes, Orange, Monaco, etc). The imitations of Dombes with the portrait of Princess Anne Marie Louise d´Orléans were in turn the model for the imitations of various Italian mints (mainly near Genova: Arquata, Fosdinovo, Loano, Tassarolo and Torriglia). These pieces were minted in large numbers for circulation in the Levant and got the name "Luigini" (after Louis XIII).Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it is an imitation of a coin minted in the name of Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, who was the Duchess of Montpensier and the Marquise of Arquata. The original coin was minted in 1668-1669, while this imitation coin was minted later, likely in the 18th or 19th century. Despite being an imitation, it is still made of billon, a type of alloy that contains .348 silver, and weighs 2.31 grams. This coin's history and the story behind its creation make it a unique and interesting piece for collectors.
