Comment
There are only a few known examples of larins from the reign of Selim II, and like the example pictured here, the legends are very incomplete. Only the luck of having the year or part of the sultan's titles help with identification. The great expert on Ottoman larins, MacKenzie, had considered the minting of larins to have begun in the reign of Murad III, but subsequent examples have emerged that show examples produced in the reign of Selim II.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about the Larin - Selim II 974 (1566) coin from Basra Eyalet (Iraq) is that it features a unique blend of Islamic and Mongolian influences in its design. The coin's obverse side features the name and title of Sultan Selim II in Arabic, while the reverse side features a stylized depiction of a Mongolian gazelle, which was a symbol of the Mongol Empire that had conquered much of the Middle East in the 13th century. This blend of styles reflects the cultural exchange and fusion that occurred during the Ottoman Empire's expansion into the region.
