Comment

The first gold coin struck by the Dukes of Brabant.

According to Elsen (Auction Catalog 132, March 2017), the design copies faithfully that of the florin issued by Louis of Nevers, Count of Flanders, from 1335. Louis' mintmaster, the Tuscan Falco da Lampaggio, left Flanders to work for John III in October 1338, and oversaw the striking of the later gold coins of John's reign (chaise d'or and ecus).
