Reverse

Full length figure of Saint Barbara dividing legend, holding palm in left hand, and right hand resting on small tower.

Script: Latin

Lettering: ✶ SANCTA ✶ BARBARA

Comment

The coin can be dated to 1574 or later because Monferrato was elevated to the status of a duchy only in 1574. Before 1574, William's coins bear the title DVX MAN III M M F (Third Duke of Mantova and Marquess of Monferrato). After 1574, the title changes to DVX MAN III ET M F I (Third Duke of Mantova and First of Monferrato).

Saint Barbara's iconography involves a tower with three windows representing the trinity, and a palm because she was a martyr according to Christian tradition.

Varieties
The reverse legend can begin at the left (main photos), or can begin at 12:00 in which case the word SANCTA is on the right and BARBARA is on the left. This variety also has a slightly different figure of the saint, and variant of the obverse legend with MAN.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Standard circulation coin Giulio - WIlliam I ND (1574-1587) from Duchy of Mantua (Italian States) made of Silver weighing 2.9 g is that it features an image of Duke William I on one side and the coat of arms of Mantua on the other.
