Reverse

The emblem of Gdańsk in a shield, held by two lions facing the front. Lettering around it.

Script: Latin

Lettering: MONE NO AVR CIVI GEDANENSIS 84

Unabridged legend: MONETA NOVA AURORA CIVITAS GEDANENSIS 1584

Translation: New gold coin, city of Gdańsk 1584.

Comment

Note: The reverse has a small ring at the top of the legend, at the end of the lettering. This is something like a mint mark used by the Gebeliusz brothers, Jan and Kaspar and later Gracjan Gonzallo.

Despite quite a low survivability it's still way more populous and common than earlier ducats of eg. Sigismund II August.

Mint: Gdańsk - Danzig - Gdansk - Гданьск - 格但斯克

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Dukat gdański - Stefan Batory (Gdańsk) 1578-1584 coin is that it features a unique blend of Polish and Lithuanian elements on its design. The obverse side of the coin bears the image of King Stefan Batory, while the reverse side features the coat of arms of the city of Gdańsk, which includes a shield with the Polish eagle and the Lithuanian Vytis. This blend of symbols reflects the political and cultural ties between Poland and Lithuania during the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
