Comment

Probably minted in Zürich. Issued for the 50th anniversary of the Abbot's ordination to the priesthood at the age of 74 and in the 36th year of his abbotship.

Muri Abbey was a Benedictine monastery between 1027 and 1841. It was founded by the Habsburgs and dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. It flourished for over eight centuries in Muri, Canton of Aargau, near Basel, Switzerland. Emperor Leopold I raised Abbott Placidus von Zurlauben (1684-1723) to the rank of prince of the Holy Roman Empire in 1701. He spent a vast sum of money in rebuilding and embellishing the monastery, the church, and the ancient mausoleum of the imperial family. The possessions of the monastery were spread on a wide radius, as far as South Germany.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Ducat - Placidus von Zurlauben 1720 coin is that it was minted to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the appointment of Placidus von Zurlauben as the Abbot of the Abbey of Muri in Aargau, Switzerland. Placidus von Zurlauben was a prominent religious figure and a patron of the arts, and the coin was minted to honor his contributions to the abbey and the community. The coin's design features an image of Placidus von Zurlauben on one side and the abbey's coat of arms on the other, and it was made of gold, which adds to its value and rarity.
