Comment

According to Christian tradition, Stephen was martyred by stoning, so his iconography often features a palm (the symbol of martyrs), a book (because he was a deacon of the church) and stones.

Both "PROTOMARTYR" and "PROTHOMARTYR" (for first martyr) appear on the legends of coins with Saint Stephen.

Interesting fact

The Double ducat (Nijmegen) ND (1523) from Duchy of Guelders (Dutch States) made of Gold is an extremely rare coin, with only a few known examples surviving to this day. One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of great turmoil in the region, with the Dutch States struggling for independence from the Habsburg Empire. Despite the challenges of the time, the coin's intricate design and high gold content make it a valuable and sought-after collector's item among numismatists.
