In 1659, the Shabana (Chebana, Shibanna, Shbanat), an Arab Bedouin tribe of Hillalian descent, once part of the Saadian army, seized control of Marrakesh and put the last Saadian Sultan, Abdul al-Abbas, to death. Their qaid, Abd al-Karim ibn Abu Bakr al-Shbani declared himself the new sultan of Marrakesh.
In 1669, Moulay al-Rashid proceeded south to capture Marrakesh, massacring the Shabana Arabs in the process.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during the reign of Abd al-Karim ibn Abu Bakr al-Shbani, who was the governor of Marrakesh during the 17th century. The coin features a unique blend of Islamic and Berber influences, reflecting the cultural diversity of Morocco during that time.
