Comment

A historically important piece minted under Batu, the founder of the Golden Horde, and thus marking a new appearance of coinage series under the Juchids.

The first numismatist to publish information about the earliest hoard of Bulghar coins was Andrey Fedorovich Lihachev. He described five types of dinars with the name of al-Nasir in his article “New Bulgharian hoard of 1887” and divided them into ten variants. A.F.Lihachev considered that all types of al-Nasir’s dinars were minted in pre-Mongol times. However at the end of his work, he added some interesting words that “it would be fair … to mark that these coins were independent Bulgharian currency, which were minted even after the Mongol invasion in the country".

In addition, A.G. Muhammadiev also supposed that silver and copper coins with the name of al-Nasir were minted before the Mongol invasion, but they did not circulate after 1251, the year Mongke became kaan.

S.A. Yanina considered the time of mintage of such coins at the beginning in the first year of Berke’s reign, 1256 to 1257. The date was extended by G.A. Fedorov-Davidov that “the earliest coins with the name of al-Nasir li-Din (who had already passed away) were minted in the Golden Horde in the 1240–50s in Bulghar”. According to A.Z. Singatullina’s point of view, the coins were minted from the beginning of the 1240s till 1251 during the reign of Batu untill the reign of khaan Mongke. Another variant of solving the problem of the mint of these coins was stated by P.N. Petrov. He considered that the mint might have been started in Bulghar in the 1230s before the Mongol conquest and the invaders probably continued the emission.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was issued during the reign of Batu Khan, who was the founder of the Golden Horde and a grandson of Genghis Khan. The coin features the name "Nasir al-Din" which means "Defender of the Faith" in Arabic, indicating that the coin was issued under Islamic rule. Additionally, the fact that it was made of silver and weighs 1.24g suggests that it was a significant denomination coin during its time.
