Comment
Dumas-Dubourg 8-1-1 :
The majority of coins of this type feature an initial potentate cross, i.e. a thin cross with a strong serif. This form of initial cross can be found in Burgundian coinage on earlier types, and the variety of denarii with this form of cross can therefore be placed at the beginning of the reign of Hugues IV.
Dumas-Dubourg 8-1-2:
Variety 8-1-2 is identical in every respect to the previous type, but is much more copper-colored (red or black). Their average weight is lower (0.75g instead of 0.91g), as is their silver content (approx. 170 ‰ instead of 182 ‰ to 292 ‰), suggesting that a weakening took place during issue.
Dumas-Dubourg 8-1-3:
There is also a variant of this coin with an initial cross formed by four distinct triangles (✠) and with a lower denomination of around 150 ‰. This typology is found on coin types subsequent to Hugues IV, indicating an issue to be placed at the end of his reign.
The change in the croisette type must have taken place in the middle of the 13th century, if we refer to other coins from other workshops, but it should only be considered as a change in stylistic mode and not as the mark of a change in title or foot, or any other sign of weakening.
Dumas-Dubourg 8-1-4:
Among the coins of the potentate cross variant (☩), a variety exists with trefoils in the 1st and 4th cantons of the cross (instead of the 2nd and 3rd cantons). This variety is not listed by Poey-d'Avant, Barthélémy or Dumas-Dubourg.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a unique design element - clovers. The coin's obverse side features a cross with clovers at the ends, while the reverse side features a clover-shaped mintmark. This distinctive design was used during the reign of Hugh IV, Duke of Burgundy, and sets the coin apart from other coins of the time.
