Interesting fact
The Denier coin from Philip II's reign was the first coin to feature the royal coat of arms on one side and the shield of the Principality of Catalonia on the other. This design was a departure from the previous coinage of the region, which had featured the effigy of the king alone. This change in design was a nod to the growing sense of national identity and pride in Catalonia during the 16th century.
