When Viscount Berenger died on July 30, 1067, his property should have been divided equally between his three sons: Raymond II, Bishop Pierre and Bernard. Raymond II, who assumed the title of viscount as soon as his father died, was quickly ousted. Bernard died young, leaving an eldest son, Aymeric.
