Shield of Burgundy arms because of Catherine of Burgundy who was the governess of the city. On the death of her husband, Catherine, youngest daughter of Philippe II of Burgundy, known as "the Bold", presides over the destinies of the Landgraviate. It was around 1418 that the magistrate of the city of Thann received the privilege of minting municipal coins there. This Rappen was minted for the duchy of Upper Alsace with the arms of the regent archduchess Catherine of Burgundy, by the municipality of Thann.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during the reign of Catherine of Burgundy, who was the daughter of Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy and the wife of Duke Leopold III of Austria. She ruled the Landgraviate of Upper Alsace as a regent for her son, Duke Sigismund, and her coinage was marked by her initials, "C" and "K," which can be seen on the obverse of the coin.
