Comment
Minted in the name of King Lothaire and Count Herbert de Vermandois, nicknamed "the Elder", who was also Count of Troyes and Meaux from 967 to 983. This is probably a slightly later issue which was perhaps struck under Herbert III, known as "the Younger", who succeeded Herbert the Elder in 984 at the latest, still during Lothaire's lifetime (Duplessy, RN (1964), p. 133).Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of great political upheaval in France. Lothair, who was the King of France at the time, was facing challenges from powerful nobles, including Count Herbert of Troyes, who was seeking to assert his independence. Despite these tensions, the coin still bears the image of both Lothair and Count Herbert, reflecting the complex power dynamics at play during this period.
