Reverse

Brabant cross with palm branches in angles

Comment

The eagle penning or "denier a l'aigle" was minted in the reigns of Henri II (1235-1248) and Henri III (1248-1261). There is no way to determine which reign for a given coin. Deniers with a two-headed eagle were minted in Antwerp (see reference below).

Varieties:
Numerous varieties exist (Witte 180-200) differing in the presence of small symbols above the eagle's shoulder obverse (crescent, star, saltire, lily), and in the content of the angles between the cross reverse (palm branches, lettering, etc).

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features an eagle on one side and a crowned king on the other, symbolizing the dual power of the king and the empire.
