Comment

The attribution to Godfrey the Bearded was proposed by K. Giesen, Überlegungen zum Typ Dannenberg 1311, in JMP 95 (2008), p. 65-83, which refutes the old attributions to Hildesheim, Duke Ordulf or Count Udo II of Stade. He locates the issuance of this denier in a Frisian workshop, before the issuance of the two types to the legend MERE CIVITAS.

Interesting fact

The coin features a unique design, with Godfrey III depicted on one side and a cross on the other, symbolizing the union between the church and state during his reign.
