Comment

The legend CORBIENSIS appears under Odo (887-898). The letters FR in the monogram are for Franco (c.890-912), abbot of the royal abbey St. Peter of Corbie. The latter must face the Viking invasions after the sacking of 881 and decides to build ramparts and resist. For this, he assumes the powers of a count, with military and legal powers. The dating of this denier is given by the Treasury of Arras where 5 specimens appeared, buried around 895/898. On this coin, any reference to monarchical authority is absent, which makes it one of the very first testimonies of feudal coinage.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about the Denier - Franco ND (890-898) from Abbey of Corbie (French States) is that it was minted during the reign of King Charles the Simple, who ruled West Francia from 898 to 922. This coin was used as a means of payment and exchange during that time, and its silver content made it a valuable and reliable form of currency.
