According to the classification scheme of Day et al. (MEC 12, Table 25), the earliest denari of Genoa (Class A) are characterized by a beaded circle around the squarish gate obverse, crude lettering including the I at the end of CVNRADI tilting to the right, and planchets that were small in relation to the die size.
The later classes use reeded or cabled inner circles, have more refined lettering. They cite a specified weight of about 0.9 grams for the earliest style.
Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during the reign of Emperor Frederick I, also known as Frederick Barbarossa, who was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1155 to 1190.
