Comment

It is the only portrait coinage struck during the whole of Charles' long reign, issued upon the retaking of Bourges, the capital of Aquitaine, from Pepin II in 848.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during the reign of Charles II, also known as Charles the Bald, who was the King of the West Franks and the Holy Roman Emperor. Despite his reign being marked by political instability and Viking raids, he was able to promote art, literature, and architecture, which led to the Carolingian Renaissance. This coin, with its intricate design and silver content, is a testament to the craftsmanship and wealth of the Carolingian States during that time.
