Comment

The reverse is sometimes spelled XPISTIANA.

The types with imperial title are minted only from 812 according to Lafaurie, confirmed by Coupland, date on which the emperor of the East recognizes this title to the emperor of the West. This also explains the rarity of these coins which were produced over a short period of time.

The meaning of the letters below the bust and whether they are mint letters is still a matter of debate. (Simon Coupland; 2024. “A denier of Besançon found in Noord-Brabant and its significance for the portrait coinage of Charlemagne (768-814)”. Jaarboek voor Munt- en Penningkunde, 111, pages 45-72.)
