Comment
This coin uses design elements of the crvx type penny of Aethelred of England (991-997) and the helmeted bust penny of Aethelred (1003-1007; see links).Elsen points out that others have taken the reverse inscription as ARNULFUS, (Arnulf II, count of Flanders 964-989) but this would be too early.
Baldwin IV was a contemporary of Aethelred, and struck other coins with Saint Omer on one side and the legend BALDVINVS on the other, also imitating English types, so he attributes the type to Baldwin IV, estimating the date circa 1010 - 1020.
Interesting fact
The Baldwin IV Denier coin from the County of Flanders (Belgian States) is interesting because it was issued during a time of great turmoil in Europe, particularly in the region that is now Belgium. Baldwin IV was the Count of Flanders from 989 to 1036, and during his reign, he faced challenges from neighboring powers and had to navigate the complex political landscape of medieval Europe. Despite these challenges, the coinage issued during his reign, such as this Denier, suggests that the region maintained a level of economic stability and prosperity. Additionally, the fact that the coin is made of silver and weighs 1.1 grams indicates that it was a significant denomination for the time period, and its design and minting process were likely carefully regulated to ensure its authenticity and value.
