Comment
This type with a helmeted bust has a long history in the history of the Reims mint. A first bimetallic series was issued in the second half of the 7th century. The gold triens were struck around 650-660 by the moneyer Leudelinus and were replaced around 670 by anonymous pale gold triens bearing the letters AR on the reverse. Finally, around 680, they were replaced by silver deniers with the chrism on the reverse.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it was minted during a time of significant political and social change in Europe. The Frankish Kingdoms, which included the Kingdom of Neustria, were in the process of consolidating their power and expanding their territories, and the coinage of this period reflects the cultural and economic shifts that were taking place. The use of silver in the production of this coin, for example, suggests that the Frankish Kingdoms had access to a stable supply of precious metals and were able to produce coins of a high quality. Additionally, the fact that the coin is anonymous, with no visible indication of who minted it, suggests that it was produced during a time of political instability or transition, when the authority of the ruling powers may have been in question. Overall, this coin offers a fascinating glimpse into the economic and political climate of early medieval Europe.
