Comment
This very rare type was minted when Caesar stopped over in Sicily in late 47 BC while preparing for his assault on Pompeian forces in north Africa. Aulus Allienus, Caesar's proconsul of Sicily, is named as the moneyer. The reverse shows Trinacrus, a son of Neptune, whose name probably derives from an alternate name of Sicily, Tinacria ("three cornered land"). Though minted in relatively small quantities, these coins saw heavy circulation, and most surviving examples display considerable wear.Interesting fact
One interesting fact about this coin is that it features a portrait of Julius Caesar, who was not only a prominent Roman general and statesman but also a key figure in the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. The coin was minted in 47 BC, just a year before Caesar's assassination, and its design reflects his growing power and influence in Roman politics. The coin's obverse side features the abbreviated title "C•CAESAR IMP•COS•ITER," which translates to "Julius Caesar, Imperator, Consul, Iterum" (or "Again"), highlighting Caesar's military victories and political achievements.
