Crocodile advancing left; dotted border. Legend above and below.

Script: Greek

Lettering:
BACIΛICCA
KΛЄOΠATPA

Translation: Queen Cleopatra

Comment

The crocodile on the reverse is an allusion to Queen Cleopatra of Mauretania's maternal heritage. She was the daughter of Antony and Cleopatra, the last queen of the Ptolemaic dynasty that had ruled Egypt, a land fertile with crocodiles, for three centuries. In the same period, Augustus also struck denarii with a crocodile on the reverse, which celebrated the Roman conquest of Egypt.

Interesting fact

One interesting fact about this coin is that it features the portrait of Cleopatra Selene, who was the daughter of Cleopatra VII, the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt, and Juba II, the king of Mauretania. This coin was minted during their reign and is a rare example of a coin that features a female ruler from ancient Egypt.
